Hella Black & Hella Proud

This piece is my love letter to us—Black, brave, unbending. I layered her silhouette against a reimagined Juneteenth flag because freedom, for us, has never been a single moment… it’s an ongoing practice. The red and white stripes stretch like memory—long, complicated, and honest. And in the corner, where stars usually sit untouched, I placed her: a crowned woman carved from shadow and light.

Her skin is intentionally deep, richly dark—because darkness is not absence. It is presence. It is power. It is the first color the world ever knew.

Her hair rises in afro puffs shaped like small, defiant suns—held by afro picks that feel like artifacts from every kitchen counter and childhood morning. A reminder that our hair has always been both a poem and a protest.

The double bamboo earrings swing like punctuation marks, finishing every sentence our mothers spoke without saying a word. They’re geometry dipped in attitude, in legacy, in that particular sparkle Black girls wear when they know exactly who they are.

This composition isn’t about patriotism. It’s about possession. About claiming space on a flag that wasn’t stitched with us in mind—but is now undeniably touched by our image, our rhythm, our truth.

A quiet revolution in red, white, blue… and Black.
